Creating homes for minibeasts is a great way for your child to develop key skills.

Minibeast hotel

Minibeasts to look out for

  • Bees
  • Ladybirds
  • Butterflies
  • Spiders
  • Beetles
  • Snails
  • Grasshoppers
  • Daddy long-legs
  • Earwigs
  • Woodlice

What you will need to make your minibeast hotel

  • A clean tin can or a 2-litre plastic bottle
  • Natural materials – leaves, grass, moss etc.
  • Bamboo canes, paper straws, brown paper or sticks
  • String

Step 1

Cut the top and bottom off the bottle to make a tube.

Or use a tin opener to cut the top and bottom off the tin. Careful of the sharp tin edges.

Safety tip: Use sandpaper to sand down the sharp edges of the tin.

Step 2

Put the bamboo canes, paper straws, rolled-up paper, or sticks inside the bottle or tin tube.

Minibeasts love to shelter inside hollow things.

Step 3

Loop some string through the bottle/can.

Step 4

Put your leaves, grass, moss etc. around the bamboo or straws in the tube.

Hang or place your minibeast hotel outside and see who comes to visit.
