REAL (Raising Early Achievement in Literacy) for practitioners

REAL (Raising Early Achievement in Literacy) is a programme for practitioners and parents to support children’s early literacy skills. It is currently being delivered through childcare settings within the four LEAP wards of Vassall, Coldharbour, Tulse Hill and Stockwell.

The aim of REAL is to enable early years practitioners to support building parents’ confidence in how they can support early literacy in the home learning environment.

What does the programme involve?

Childcare settings identify families with children three years and under, who live in the LEAP wards.

Practitioners start with a two day training course to learn about the four strands of REAL – books, early writing, environmental print and oral language.

They are also introduced to the framework of ‘ORIM’ which demonstrates four main ways in which parents can help their children’s literacy development through;

  • Opportunities
  • Recognition
  • Interaction
  • Modelling

Throughout the programme practitioners are offered support from an early years consultant, through network meetings and available contact.

After the training practitioners are expected to carry out or attend the following;

  • Four home visits
  • Three Literacy events
  • Three support network meetings

Childcare settings who are currently doing REAL, find that it is an excellent programme for supporting parent partnerships.  Practitioners are often surprised of the impact it can have on a child’s confidence within the setting. Children who may not have engaged with literacy activities previously, show genuine interest and are much more confident when talking at home and within the setting.

Funding

The training is free to LEAP wards of Vassall, Coldharbour, Tulse Hill and Stockwell.  There is funding available to settings to help support release time of practitioners and purchasing of resources, this is subject to a signed service level agreement between the setting and LEAP.

If your setting has children three years and under who live in one of the four LEAP wards and would like to take part in this free programme, then please contact;
